Extension/Outreach Strategic Plan 2005-2010

 

Vision

Well nourished and active people in health-promoting communities

 

Mission

Promote healthy eating and active lifestyles, wise use of personal and environmental resources, access to nutritious and safe food, and communities that support healthy choices

 

Functions

Ø      Develop professionals, paraprofessionals, and educators in nutrition and related fields

Ø      Provide technical assistance and information in program goal areas to front-line educators and policy makers

Ø      Lead the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program and other mandated Extension programs in NYS

Ø      Conduct applied research and evaluation studies

Ø      Secure external resources for and use innovative strategies to address selected high priority nutrition and health problems and issues

 

Strategies for Addressing the Mission in the Next Five Years

Ø      Emphasize capacity building and continuing professional development of nutrition and health professionals, community educators, and adults who work with youth

Ø      Effectively use Cornell NutritionWorks and other communications technologies in continuing professional development

Ø      Collaborate on research and outreach with (a) off-campus extension educators; (b) national and state partners in the land grant system; (c) on-campus faculty in a variety of disciplines; and (d) local, state, and federal policy institutions and stakeholders

Ø      Link research and nutrition practice through the development and implementation of focused, high-impact, tested, theory-based nutrition and health interventions

Ø      Build educational and environmental supports for program goals by contributing to the development of a center for policy dialog and deliberation

 

Program Goals for the Next Five Years

Ø      To secure external resources to increase the capacity and self-efficacy of nutrition and health professionals for promoting, facilitating, planning, implementing and evaluating environmental and/or educational interventions to (a) promote healthy eating and active living; (b) promote health and well-being of youth; and (c) promote sustainable food systems and access to healthy food, especially among socially and economically disadvantaged populations.

Ø      To promote the nutrition, health and well-being of low income New York State individuals and families through positive nutrition practices, wise use of personal and environmental resources, access to nutritious and safe food, and food secure communities

Ø      To secure external resources to address obesity prevention in various stages of the life course (infants, children, women, and adult workers) in various settings (schools, homes, workplaces, and communities) through environmental, educational and policy interventions

Ø      To secure external resources to promote increased access to healthy and regionally-grown foods in schools and communities

 

Expected Outcomes

Ø      Nutrition, health and community educators who have the capacity to plan, implement, and evaluate effective community-based nutrition interventions

Ø      Nutrition, health and community educators who use Cornell NutritionWorks to access a convenient source of evolving, research-based information that fosters their professional development

Ø      At least three externally-funded nutrition and health promotion projects that include local and university-based educators in priority program goal areas

Ø      Improved health and nutrition outcomes for low income individuals participating in Food and Nutrition Education in Communities programs
